Why should a hobbyist or even a small retail business settle for making only tiny things? Well, price is usually the limiting factor. Hobbyists and small businesses don’t have deep pockets that can afford thousands of dollars for a 3D printer that can produce large-scale commercial-grade printed products.

The ANYCUBIC Chiron 3D printer shatters that limited vision because 3D printers with more extensive build beds do not have to reach people who want to experiment or build a niche business for specialized products.

ANYCUBIC is a 3D printing company from China. There was a lot of tinkering before they created their first product. It took them a whole year to make their first 3D printer which was the ANYCUBIC Mega.

Their motto is to make 3D printers more accessible and affordable and the Chiron continues that trend.

Breakdown Of The ANYCUBIC Chiron

Print Quality

The printing is precise and safe. It is equipped with a y-axis power Mosfet drive, taking into account safety and heating effects.

It contains double Z-axis too. One warning to users is to wait until you take the print off. It takes time for the print bed to cool down. Taking it off quickly can ruin the print’s bottom.

There is nothing special as far as print quality goes. The precision for this printer is average to industry standard. There will be layering issues if you don’t pick the right settings similar to any other printer. This might be more common with this printer though since the bed leveling is somewhat difficult.

Set Up

The machine is relatively easy to assemble. The TFT Touch Screen has a brand new friendly UI so you can preview model and printing processes on screen. ANYCUBIC uses a high-grade Titan Extruder which is smooth feeding. This means it doesn’t easily get fouled or plugged.

It’s much easier to navigate the user interface then installing the printer. One disadvantage with the user interface is you can only use Cura.

The printer comes with a spool holder full of PLA which you can find once you open the box. It also contains a bag of supplies and equipment like gloves, hot end,  cables, and more filament.

Taking out the base is something you need to watch out for. It’s deceptively large, but the gantry below it is easy to handle.

The print bed (Ultrabase Pro) has a microporous coating that keeps your product on the build bed. The product won’t fall over while printing is in progress. 

The good news is that porous coating easily releases the product from the bed when it’s finished, so long as you let the bed cool down first. The printer is compatible with a wide array of filaments.

The ANYCUBIC Chiron has some unique features that you need to consider. For instance, even though the printer has an auto-leveling function, you must first manually level it for the auto-leveling to work correctly. That makes it a semi-automatic leveling system. The initial manual calibration takes some skill to get right, but it’s a one-time thing. The auto-leveling takes over from that point. 

Overall, the set up process is easy. The only difficult part is the bed leveling part.

Features

The short-distance extruder provides increased print accuracy when printing between 0.002 inches to 0.012 inches. In metric measure, that’s 0.05 to 0.3 mm.

This 3D printer has an intuitive full-color touch display that you can use to change/control the settings and operate the printer with your fingertip. 

It has a filament sensor that will alert you if the printer runs out of filament or breaks while printing. Other features that you should care about include:

  • Technology: Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)
  • X, Y, Z positioning accuracy is rated at 12.5 microns x-axis, 12.5 microns y-axis, and 2 microns z-axis. One micron equals .00003937 inches. It’s very accurate printing.

Design

The power supply and base of the printer is huge. It’s has an open enclosure which bothers us, but this is just us nitpicking. One note worth mentioning about the power supply is it’s huge because the printer itself is huge.

This allows it to print bigger models with its huge build volume. A huge printer like this requires big fans and a motor dampener. The downside to big fans and a motor dampener is it can get noisy.

Alternatives To The ANYCUBIC Chiron

Creality CR-10S

Both versions of the Creality CR-10S Pro give you a smaller build volume compared to the ANYCUBIC Chiron. Plus, at a pricer north of the Chiron’s, you’ll pay more for the Creality than the ANYCUBIC with available coupons.

The Creality 3D printer is a competitor because of its reliability and power despite its small build volume. It has a streamlined and modern design with all the wires hidden from view. It’s also a user-friendly machine.

The Creality’s power comes from a 480-watt Meanwell power supply. The Capricon filament tubing is heat resistant. It has a filament sensor and an easy-to-understand user interface. You can pause and resume printing with Creality.

Raise3D Pro2 Plus

  • The extruders are replaceable, but it takes some skill and adherence to the manufacturer’s direction of how to do it. If you go rogue, you will bend the new extruder if you’re not careful

The price causes some sticker shock, but it’s generally agreed that you get the extra features to justify the cost.

The build volume is huge at 12 by 12 by 23.8 inches (305 by 305 by 605 millimeters) which for a small business trying to create a niche capability might be just what it needs. The build volume advantage over the ANYCUBIC Chiron is in the height of the print job you can do. There is no added advantage of the Raise3D over the ANYCUBIC Chiron from the depth and width perspective.

The print bed makes it easy to remove prints because it comes with a feature that makes it heated. Like most low budget printers, this printer comes with its imperfections for print quality.

This printer is an all-around printer from price to sturdiness. You should think of getting this if you’re new to 3D printing and want to get your hands dirty.

Is The ANYCUBIC Chiron The Right 3D Printer For You?

The ANYCUBIC Chiron 3D printer provides these capabilities at a reasonable price:

  • Build large models in a 2ft x 2ft x 2ft volume
  • It comes mostly assembled out of the box with a short 10-minute job to complete the assembly for some bolt-on pieces
  • The build bed is semi-automatic but becomes fully automatic after you’ve dialed everything in manually first. The manufacturer instructions are clear and intuitive
  • The key to obtaining excellent print quality lies in finding the suitable technical profiles for the piece you want to print. It’ll give you quality results equal to higher-end printers that cost much more.
  • It has a full-color touch display and is compatible with a large selection of filaments.

This printer works fast and at a high quality. The speed clocks in at 0.79 inches per second for the slower high-resolution print job. It has a top speed of 4 inches per second for lower-resolution jobs.

You get all this for a reasonable price. The Chiron is top of the line for lower budget printers. Yes, there are 3D printers that can do more and with higher quality. However, the price will set you back with some sticker shock.

So, if price, build volume, and desirable features are what you have in mind, the ANYCUBIC Chiron is a solid choice.
